somewhere south

Don’t miss our latest adventure video below  “Somewhere South”

For best picture quality watch it in 1080P and on a BIG screen, with the sound cranked way up and enjoy!!

It was that time of year again, fall in Alaska, time for the three of us to head south.

Denali’s Fall Colors Always Amaze

Every fall just before we depart, the weather always seems to give us a little taste of what’s ahead and invigorates us to hit the road.  September 12, 2025

Northern Lights Dance Over Kluane Lake, Yukon

We typically try to head south mid September so we can catch the fall colors as we pass through Canada and eventually into the lower 48 states.

Ruby Explores Oldman Creek In The Canadian Rockies

Otherwise Known As A Cattle Guard

This year we decide to explore a few new back road areas within beautiful British Columbia and Alberta.

One Of Our Favorite Camps Along Oldman River

Our desire to explore new country often finds us driving on steep and narrow roads that lead us to remote camps with breathtaking views.

There’s Nothing Quite Like Alberta And Beautiful British Columbia

Eventually we enter Montana and cross into Idaho exploring some of the most remote back roads in the lower 48 states including the River of No Return Wilderness.

Crossing The Selway River We Enter Pure Wilderness

Soon we find ourselves driving over 8000 ft and winter on our heels.  Freezing temps at night especially at the higher altitudes invigorate us to move south again.

Denise and Ruby Enjoy The Streets Of Whitefish Montana

Next we wander into Idaho and Oregon and explore the Owyhee River Wilderness. Ultimately we drive over 200 miles of often very rough back roads to find this amazing landscape.

An Alvord Desert Sunset

Finally we spend several days in eastern Oregon camped on the Alvord playa enjoying the warm sun, the distant views of the Steens Mountains and sipping red wine during the amazing sunsets.

From the Alvord we head west to visit good friends in the Bend area and to buy some new tires.

  1. Hola Mi Amigos! Another great video! The picture quality is wonderful….. did you get a new drone? I was thinking during the one segment with all of the downed trees, I’ll bet Tim has a chainsaw, and sure enough! Happy trails! Don 1000

    1. Thanks for the nice comment Don, yes my cordless chainsaw did the trick, glad I had it. I bought a new drone just before the ban, good timing for sure. Hope you had a good Christmas, we may see you this winter time will tell!

  4. the Nic of BlaNics here… We had such fun vicariously going on this adventure with you The new additions to your cinematic toolkit added a whole new visual experience. Plus I almost felt as though I was sitting right there with Ruby traveling down those long, curvy one-lane roads. Good to see so much wilderness. Oh and Ruby .. crossed the stream ..Good Girl!!!

  5. Photos are stunning and watching the video on a “big screen” with the sound bar set high was great. Pics and video bring even more life to the stories you shared with us. We miss you three…

  6. Cliff’s son lives in Bend. We enjoy seeing the videos and pictures. We did a 10 day road trip through Oklahoma and Arkansas a couple of months ago and will try to do more exploring in the Eastern states this next year. We did the Alcan three times including once through British Columbia and once at -50. Carolyn rolled our truck in the mid 70’s coming out of the Canadian Rockies and landed on our wheels in the ditch 12 miles from Ft Nelson. We were able to make it into the town and get fixed up to finish our journey. Stay in touch

    1. Hi Jim and Carolyn, very glad your following our adventures, your Alcan adventures sound epic!, those were the days for sure, no internet, no cell phones just by the seat of our pants travel….miss those days!
